All Nikon's F mount 70-200 f/2.8 lenses, both G and E type, are AF-S (built-in focus motor), not screw drive. All AF-S lenses will autofocus with the FTZ adapter, so the OP's lens will be fully functional. The replacement 24-70 is also an AF-S G type. Thanks again for all the support provided.
6. I finally completed a full review of Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f2.8E FL ED VR lens on my blog, and I must say that lens is excellent. I compared it with old Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f2.8G ED VRII. New lens is in all aspects, a good replacement for the previous model Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f2.8G ED VRII. Only vignetting at 200mm and f2.8 could be better.

Jan 29, 2020. #3. I have the Tamron 70-200 G2. It’s a sharp lens (on the 24mp bodies I have owned, anyway) and generally well-behaved for less money than Nikon’s VRII or FL. Optically it is comparable to the VRII, and exhibits the same focus breathing. Some say it’s as sharp as the latest FL version from Nikon
FRuj. Apr 24, 2013. I have a very new (less than 2 months) 70-200 f2.8 VRII that won't focus any longer. I've only shot with this lens a half-dozen times before it started to act up. Body is a D7000 although we (I bought it local so I took it back to the shop I purchased it at) tested it out on a D600, and 7100 to verify that it was indeed the lens.
The number of ED elements in the 70-200mm f/4G lens design is fewer: 3 versus 7 on the 70-200mm f/2.8G. A big advantage, in my opinion for the 70-200mm f/4G is its closer focusing distance of 3.28 ft versus 4.6 ft on the f/2.8G version. Because the barrel size is smaller, the filter size is also smaller – 67mm versus 77mm.

1. When 60MP sensors arrive, the increased picture quality of the 2.8 lens will show. Right now, at 45MP, there is no difference between the output of f2.8 24-70, f4, 35mm, 50mm, 58mm, 85mm…. They are all superb lenses. The advantages of the f4 lens: weight, size, close focus, and cost.
